Key Features of Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Tube

Excellent Heat Transfer Efficiency:

Smooth internal and external surfaces with consistent wall thickness minimize thermal resistance and maximize heat transfer coefficients, improving overall system efficiency and reducing energy consumption.

Outstanding Corrosion Resistance:

Excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and oxidation in a wide range of environments, including fresh water, seawater, chemical media, and high-temperature atmospheres.

High-Temperature Strength:

Maintains mechanical properties at elevated temperatures up to 870°C (1600°F), suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature heat exchanger service.

Weldability and Formability:

Austenitic stainless steel grades offer superior weldability for tube-to-tubesheet joining and excellent formability for tube expansion, rolling, and U-bending.

Precision Dimensional Accuracy:

Strict tolerances on outside diameter (OD), wall thickness, and concentricity ensure proper fitment in tube sheets and consistent heat transfer performance.

Smooth Internal Surface Finish:

Low surface roughness (Ra ≤ 0.4μm available) reduces fouling, improves cleanability, and enhances heat transfer efficiency, particularly for sanitary and high-purity applications.

International Certification:

Tubes can be certified by ABS, BV, DNV, LR, GL, RINA, CCS, KR, and NK, and comply with ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, NORSOK, and PED 2014/68/EU standards.

Note: The lower carbon content in TP304L and TP316L minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, providing enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion compared to standard grades, especially in high-temperature or welded service environments. TP321 and TP347 are stabilized grades with titanium or niobium additions, offering superior resistance to intergranular corrosion in high-temperature service.

Heat Treatment Condition:
Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes are solution annealed at the following temperatures followed by rapid cooling (water quenching or rapid air cooling):

Grade

Solution Annealing Temperature

TP304 / TP304L

1010–1080°C

TP316 / TP316L

1040–1080°C

TP321 / TP321H

1050–1100°C

TP347 / TP347H

1050–1100°C

This heat treatment:

1. Restores full corrosion resistance by dissolving chromium carbides.

2. Relieves internal stresses from cold drawing or cold pilgering.

3. Enhances ductility for tube expansion and rolling into tube sheets.

4. Prevents intergranular corrosion after welding and high-temperature service.

Delivery Condition:
Tubes are normally supplied in solution annealed and pickled condition, providing a clean, smooth surface and excellent corrosion resistance. Upon request, bright annealed (BA) finish can be provided for applications requiring ultra-clean internal surfaces. Polished finishes are also available for enhanced cleanability and reduced fouling.

Manufacturing Process of Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Tube (Seamless)

Womic Steel adopts advanced production technology to ensure each Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Tube meets exact specifications with flawless surface quality and precise dimensional accuracy.

· Raw Material Selection: High-quality stainless steel billets from certified mills (Baosteel, TISCO, POSCO, Outokumpu) with certified chemical composition and traceability.

· Heating and Piercing: Billets heated to a controlled temperature and pierced using a rotary piercing mill to form hollow shells.

· Hot Rolling: Shells elongated and rolled to desired intermediate size.

· Cold Drawing / Cold Pilgering: Tubes refined to precise dimensions with improved surface finish. Multiple passes with intermediate annealing may be used for tight tolerance requirements.

· Solution Annealing: Heat treatment to restore corrosion resistance and ductility. Performed in controlled atmosphere furnaces for bright annealed finish.

· Pickling & Passivation: Removal of oxides and creation of passive film for enhanced corrosion protection. For BA finish, pickling is omitted.

· Straightening and Dimensional Calibration: Ensures consistent roundness, straightness, and wall uniformity. Special attention to OD tolerance for tube sheet fitment.

· Cutting and End Finishing: Tubes cut to precise lengths with square ends, deburred, and prepared for tube sheet insertion.

· Final Inspection & Marking: Each tube tested, marked with grade, heat number, standard, and tube dimensions before packing.

This process guarantees a smooth internal bore, high structural integrity, precise dimensional accuracy, and exceptional corrosion resistance across all batches of Womic Steel’s Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes.

Manufacturing Process of Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Tube (Welded)

Womic Steel utilizes state-of-the-art manufacturing technology to ensure every Welded Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Tube meets precise specifications and delivers excellent surface quality and performance.

1.   Raw Material Selection: High-quality stainless steel strips/coils from certified suppliers (e.g., Baosteel, TISCO, POSCO, Outokumpu).

2.   Slitting & Uncoiling: The steel coil is slit to the required width and uncoiled for feeding into the forming mill.

3.   Forming & Welding: The strip is progressively formed into a cylindrical shape and the edges are welded together using advanced TIG or Plasma welding techniques to create a solid weld seam with full penetration.

4.   Weld Seam Treatment: The external weld bead is removed to achieve a smooth surface flush with the base metal. The internal bead may be controlled or removed for applications requiring a smooth internal bore.

5.   Solution Annealing: A full heat treatment process is applied to dissolve carbides, restore corrosion resistance, and relieve stresses from welding and forming. For welded heat exchanger tubes, this is critical for weld zone corrosion resistance.

6.   Sizing & Calibration: The tube is passed through a sizing mill to achieve the final precise outer diameter and roundness. OD tolerance can be as tight as ±0.05mm.

7.   Straightening: The tube is straightened to ensure optimal linearity for tube sheet insertion.

8.   Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) : The weld seam is inspected using Eddy Current Testing (ECT) or Ultrasonic Testing (UT) to ensure integrity and quality. 100% of the tube length is tested.

9.   Hydrostatic Testing: Each tube is pressure tested to verify leak-tight integrity.

10.Final Inspection & Marking: Each tube undergoes dimensional checks (OD, WT, length), visual inspection (internal and external surface), and is marked with grade, heat number, and relevant standards before packaging.

This controlled process guarantees a consistent weld seam with full penetration, excellent dimensional accuracy, smooth internal surface, and superior corrosion resistance for every batch of Womic Steel’s Welded Stainless Steel Heat Exchanger Tubes.
