Key Features of Duplex 2205 Heat Exchanger Tube

Superior Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance:

Excellent resistance to chloride-induced SCC, significantly outperforming TP304 and TP316 in chloride-containing environments, especially at elevated temperatures.

High Mechanical Strength:

Minimum yield strength of ≥450 MPa (approximately twice that of TP304/TP316L), allowing for thinner wall sections, weight reduction, and improved heat transfer efficiency.

Excellent Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Resistance:

PRE (Pitting Resistance Equivalent) ≥ 34 for S31803 and ≥ 35 for S32205, providing reliable service in seawater, brackish water, and aggressive chemical media.

Good Heat Transfer Efficiency:

Higher thermal conductivity than austenitic stainless steels, combined with the ability to use thinner walls due to higher strength, results in excellent overall heat transfer coefficients.

Good Weldability and Fabricability:

Maintains balanced ferrite/austenite ratio in the weld zone with proper welding procedures, suitable for tube-to-tubesheet welding and U-bending.

High Resistance to Erosion and Corrosion Fatigue:

Ideal for high-velocity seawater and slurry heat exchanger applications where combined mechanical and corrosive attack occurs.

Low Thermal Expansion:

Lower coefficient of thermal expansion than austenitic grades, reducing thermal stress in tube sheets and improving fatigue life in cyclic service.

Precision Dimensional Accuracy:

Strict tolerances on outside diameter (OD), wall thickness, and concentricity ensure proper fitment in tube sheets and consistent heat transfer performance.

International Certification:

Tubes can be certified by ABS, BV, DNV, LR, GL, RINA, CCS, KR, and NK, and comply with NORSOK M-630, ISO 17781, and NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour service applications.

Critical Note: Duplex 2205 is not recommended for prolonged service above 300°C due to the risk of embrittling intermetallic phase precipitation. For heat exchanger applications above 300°C, super duplex grades (S32750/S32760) or austenitic grades (TP321/TP347) should be considered.

Heat Treatment Condition:
Duplex 2205 Heat Exchanger Tubes are solution annealed at 1040–1120°C followed by rapid cooling (water quenching) . This heat treatment:

l  Restores the balanced 40–60% ferrite / 40–60% austenite microstructure.

l  Dissolves unwanted intermetallic phases (sigma, chi) that can reduce corrosion resistance and toughness.

l  Relieves internal stresses from cold drawing or cold pilgering.

l  Ensures optimal mechanical properties and maximum corrosion resistance.

l Critical Note: Unlike austenitic grades (TP304/TP316), Duplex 2205 requires water quenching after solution annealing. Air cooling is insufficient and will result in intermetallic phase precipitation, severely reducing corrosion resistance and toughness.

Delivery Condition:
Tubes are normally supplied in solution annealed and pickled condition, providing a clean, smooth surface and excellent corrosion resistance. Bright annealing is not recommended for duplex grades due to the water quenching requirement.

· Raw Material Selection: High-quality S31803/S32205 duplex stainless steel billets from certified mills (Outokumpu, Sandvik, POSCO, Baosteel) with certified chemical composition and ferrite/austenite balance.

· Heating and Piercing: Billets heated to controlled temperature (lower than austenitic grades to prevent ferrite coarsening) and pierced using a rotary piercing mill.

· Hot Rolling: Shells elongated and rolled to desired intermediate size with strict temperature control.

· Cold Drawing / Cold Pilgering: Tubes refined to precise dimensions with improved surface finish and enhanced mechanical properties.

· Solution Annealing: Critical heat treatment at 1040–1120°C followed by water quenching to restore balanced duplex structure.

· Pickling & Passivation: Removal of oxides and creation of passive film; special pickling acids optimized for duplex grades.

· Straightening and Dimensional Calibration: Ensures consistent roundness, straightness, and wall uniformity. Special attention to OD tolerance for tube sheet fitment.

· Cutting and End Finishing: Tubes cut to precise lengths with square ends, deburred, and prepared for tube sheet insertion.

· Ferrite Content Measurement: Verification of phase balance – typically 35–65% ferrite.

· Final Inspection & Marking: Each tube tested, marked with grade, heat number, standard, and tube dimensions before packing.

This process guarantees a balanced dual-phase microstructure, smooth internal bore, high structural integrity, precise dimensional accuracy, and exceptional corrosion resistance across all batches of Womic Steel’s Duplex 2205 Heat Exchanger Tubes.

Manufacturing Process of Duplex 2205 Heat Exchanger Tube (Welded)

Womic Steel utilizes state-of-the-art manufacturing technology to ensure every Welded Duplex 2205 Heat Exchanger Tube meets precise specifications with weld zone phase balance and excellent surface quality.

1.   Raw Material Selection: High-quality S31803/S32205 duplex stainless steel strips/coils from certified suppliers with full traceability.

2.   Slitting & Uncoiling: Precision slitting to required width; edge preparation to ensure clean, burr-free edges for welding.

3.   Forming & Welding: The strip is progressively formed into a cylindrical shape. The edges are welded using advanced TIG or Plasma welding with:

l   Strict heat input control (typically 0.5–1.5 kJ/mm)

l   Shielding gas: Ar + N₂ (2–5% nitrogen) to prevent nitrogen loss

l   Matching filler metal (ER2209) for optimal weld properties

4.   Weld Seam Treatment: External weld bead removal to achieve smooth surface flush with base metal. Internal bead may be controlled or removed.

5.   Solution Annealing: Full heat treatment of the entire welded tube at 1040–1120°C followed by water quenching – essential for restoring corrosion resistance and balanced microstructure in the weld and HAZ.

6.   Sizing & Calibration: The tube is passed through a sizing mill to achieve final precise OD and roundness.

7.   Straightening: The tube is straightened to ensure optimal linearity for tube sheet insertion.

8.   Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) : Weld seam inspected using Eddy Current Testing (ECT) or Ultrasonic Testing (UT). 100% of tube length tested.

9.   Hydrostatic Testing: Each tube pressure tested to verify leak-tight integrity.

10.Ferrite Content Measurement: Verification of weld and base metal phase balance (35–65% ferrite).

11.Final Inspection & Marking: Complete dimensional check, visual inspection, and traceable marking.

This controlled process guarantees a sound weld seam, excellent dimensional accuracy, balanced duplex microstructure, and superior corrosion resistance for every batch of Womic Steel’s Welded Duplex 2205 Heat Exchanger Tubes.
