ASTM B677 904L is a super austenitic stainless steel specifically designed for applications where conventional austenitic steels (304/316L) fail due to insufficient corrosion resistance in aggressive acid environments or high chloride conditions. The “904L” designation indicates high nickel (23-28%), high chromium (19-23%), molybdenum (4-5%) and the addition of copper (1-2%). The copper content is critical for resistance to sulfuric acid.
Compared to 316L (PREN 24-26), 904L has a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) of approximately 34, meaning it has significantly better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. It also offers superior resistance to reducing acids such as sulfuric, phosphoric, formic, and acetic acid. The high nickel content provides excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and good stability at elevated temperatures.
