Heat Treatment Condition:
Both 304 and 304L stainless steel round bars are normally supplied in the annealed
condition. Solution annealing at 1010–1080°C followed by rapid cooling
(water quenching) restores full corrosion resistance, relieves internal
stresses from rolling or forging, and ensures optimal ductility for further
machining operations.

304 and 304L stainless steel round bars?
The main difference is carbon content. 304L has lower carbon (≤0.03% vs
≤0.08%), which prevents carbide precipitation during welding and provides
better resistance to intergranular corrosion. For welded components, 304L is
typically preferred.
2. Can 304 round bars be used in
marine environments?
No. For seawater or high-chloride environments, use 316/316L or duplex
stainless steel round bars. 304/304L is not suitable for marine applications.
3. What is the maximum diameter
available for 304/304L round bars?
Standard diameters up to 300mm. Larger diameters up to 500mm are available upon
request with extended lead time.
4. What surface finish is best for
bolt and fastener manufacturing?
Cold drawn finish is recommended for bolt and fastener manufacturing. It
provides consistent diameter tolerances (h9) and smooth surface finish, ideal
for heading and threading operations.
5. What is the maximum service
temperature for 304L round bars?
800°C (1472°F) for continuous service; 850°C (1562°F) for intermittent service.
For prolonged service above 500°C, consider 304H or 321 stainless steel.
6. Are 304/304L round bars magnetic?
In the annealed condition, 304/304L round bars are non-magnetic. However, cold
working (drawing, grinding) may induce slight magnetism. For applications
requiring strict non-magnetic properties, specify solution annealed condition.
