1. What is the difference between
OS&Y and NRS gate valves?
OS&Y (Outside Stem and Yoke) has rising stem indicating valve position –
threads outside the flow medium. NRS (Non-Rising Stem) has stem threads inside
the valve – used where vertical space is limited such as underground water
boxes.
2. What is the difference between
304 and 304L gate valves for water service?
304L has lower carbon (≤0.03%), preventing carbide precipitation during
welding. For welded end valves, 304L is preferred. For threaded or flanged
connections, both are suitable.
3. Can 304 gate valves be used for
seawater?
No. For seawater or marine applications, use 316/316L or duplex stainless steel
gate valves.
4. What is the maximum temperature
for 304L gate valves?
Continuous service: 200°C (392°F) for standard service. For higher
temperatures, consider 304H or alloy steel.
5. What is the difference between
solid wedge and flexible wedge?
Solid wedge is one-piece, simple and cost-effective. Flexible wedge has slots
to accommodate thermal expansion, preventing binding in high-temperature
service or thermal cycling.
6. Are these gate valves suitable
for throttling service?
Gate valves are not recommended for throttling. Partial opening causes seat and
wedge erosion. For flow regulation, use globe valves or butterfly valves.
