Key Features of 316/316L Stainless Steel Coils

Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments, seawater, and aggressive chemical media, thanks to 2–3% molybdenum content. The low carbon 316L version provides enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding.

Superior Formability and Ductility: Excellent elongation (≥40%) allows for deep drawing, bending, stamping, and roll forming without cracking, suitable for complex part geometries.

Precise Dimensional Tolerances: Tight thickness tolerances (up to ±0.03mm for cold-rolled coils) ensure consistent material feeding for automated production lines.

Excellent Weldability: 316L grade ensures low carbon content for superior weld performance, with reduced risk of intergranular corrosion in welded fabrications. Suitable for TIG, MIG, laser, and resistance welding.

Smooth Surface Quality: Available in 2B (cold-rolled bright finish), BA (bright annealed), No.1 (hot-rolled annealed and pickled), No.4 (polished), HL (hairline), and mirror finishes.

High Mechanical Strength: Excellent tensile and yield strength with good ductility for structural fabrications and pressure vessel applications.

International Certifications: Coils can be certified by ABS, BV, DNV, LR, GL, RINA, CCS, KR, and NK, and comply with NORSOK standards for offshore projects.

Heat Treatment Condition:
Both 316 and 316L stainless steel coils are normally supplied in the annealed and pickled condition for hot-rolled coils, or bright annealed for cold-rolled coils. Solution annealing at 1040–1080°C followed by rapid cooling restores full corrosion resistance, relieves internal stresses from rolling, and ensures optimal ductility for further forming operations.

Delivery Condition Options:

Hot-Rolled (HR): As-rolled, annealed and pickled (No.1 finish), or black hot-rolled

Cold-Rolled (CR): 2B finish (bright cold-rolled), 2D finish (dull cold-rolled), BA finish (bright annealed)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is the difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel coils?
The main difference is carbon content. 316L has lower carbon (≤0.03% vs ≤0.08%), which prevents carbide precipitation during welding and provides better resistance to intergranular corrosion. For welded fabrications, 316L is typically preferred.

2. What is the standard coil weight for 316 stainless steel coils?
Standard coil weights range from 5 to 15 metric tons for cold-rolled coils and 10 to 25 metric tons for hot-rolled coils. Custom coil weights available upon request.

3. Can you slit coils to custom widths?
Yes. We offer slitting services to produce narrow strips from 20mm to 600mm width. Tolerances for slit edges are ±0.5mm.

4. What surface finish is best for food processing equipment?
2B finish is standard for food processing. For direct food contact surfaces, No.4 (polished) or BA finish with Ra ≤ 0.5μm is recommended for cleanability.

5. Are your coils suitable for deep drawing applications?
Yes. 316/316L coils offer excellent ductility with elongation ≥40%, suitable for deep drawing, stamping, and severe forming operations.

6. Do you provide material test reports (MTR) and certification?
Yes, every shipment includes EN 10204 Type 3.1 MTR with chemical analysis and mechanical properties. Third-party inspection (SGS, BV, DNV) available upon request.

7. Are 316L coils suitable for seawater service?
316L offers good resistance to seawater but is susceptible to crevice corrosion in stagnant conditions. For continuous seawater immersion, consider duplex 2205 or super duplex 2507 coils.
