Key Features of 316/316L Stainless Steel Flat Bars

Corrosion Resistance: Excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments, seawater, and aggressive chemical media, thanks to 2–3% molybdenum content. The low carbon 316L version provides enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding.

High Mechanical Strength: Good tensile and yield strength with excellent ductility for load-bearing structural applications and machinery components.

Superior Weldability: 316L grade ensures low carbon content for superior weld performance, with reduced risk of intergranular corrosion in welded fabrications. Suitable for TIG, MIG, and laser welding.

Precision Dimensional Tolerances: Tight thickness and width tolerances (EN 10058, DIN 593, ASTM A484) ensure consistent material for fabrication and machining.

Smooth Surface Quality: Available in black (hot-rolled), pickled, and polished finishes for various industrial and architectural applications.

Excellent Machinability: Good chip formation and surface finish characteristics for milling, drilling, punching, and shearing operations.

Square Edges: Precision-rolled square edges for accurate fitting and welding.

International Certifications: Flat bars can be certified by ABS, BV, DNV, LR, GL, RINA, CCS, KR, and NK, and comply with ASME, ASTM, EN, and JIS standards.

Both 316 and 316L stainless steel flat bars exhibit excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. The lower carbon content in 316L minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, providing enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion compared to standard 316, especially in welded fabrications.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is the difference between 316 and 316L stainless steel flat bars?
The main difference is carbon content. 316L has lower carbon (≤0.03% vs ≤0.08%), which prevents carbide precipitation during welding and provides better resistance to intergranular corrosion. For welded fabrications, 316L is typically preferred.

2. What are the standard lengths for stainless steel flat bars?
Standard lengths are 3000mm (3 meters) and 6000mm (6 meters). Custom lengths up to 12000mm are available upon request.

3. What is the difference between black and pickled flat bars?
Black (hot-rolled) flat bars have mill scale on the surface and are suitable for general structural applications where surface appearance is not critical. Pickled flat bars have the mill scale removed by acid treatment, providing a clean, oxide-free surface ideal for welding and fabrication.

4. Can 316 flat bars be used in marine environments?
Yes, 316/316L flat bars offer excellent resistance to seawater corrosion and are widely used in marine hardware, shipbuilding, and offshore applications. ABS/DNV/LR certifications available.

5. What are square edges?
Square edges refer to the cross-section corners of the flat bar being sharp 90-degree angles. Precision-rolled square edges ensure accurate fitting, welding, and assembly in structural applications.

6. Do you provide material test reports (MTR) and certification?
Yes, every shipment includes EN 10204 Type 3.1 MTR with chemical analysis and mechanical properties. Third-party inspection available upon request.
