The high chromium content of Inconel 600 (UNS N06600) significantly improves its resistance to oxidation compared with pure nickel, while the high nickel content provides excellent corrosion resistance under reducing environments.
This nickel-chromium-iron alloy demonstrates outstanding resistance to:
Stress corrosion cracking
Seawater and saltwater environments
Exhaust gases
Most organic acids and chemical compounds
As a result, Alloy 600 is widely used in chemical processing, marine engineering, heat treatment equipment, and high-temperature corrosive environments.
Alloy 600 is not an age-hardening alloy. Cold working is the only effective method for increasing strength.
Annealing begins at approximately 1600°F (871°C)
Full softening is typically achieved after 10–15 minutes at 1800°F (982°C)
Heating above this temperature may cause grain growth, although brief exposure at 1900°F (1038°C) can achieve complete softening without excessive grain coarsening
The cooling rate does not affect softening, therefore the material may be air cooled or water quenched after annealing.
Hot Working & Forging
Low-sulfur, reducing furnace atmospheres are recommended
Major hot working operations should be performed between 2300°F and 1850°F (1260–1010°C)
Light hot working may continue down to 1600°F (871°C)
Hot working is not recommended between 1600°F and 1200°F (871–649°C) due to reduced ductility
Proper temperature control ensures excellent forgeability and minimizes cracking risk.
Inconel 600 can be machined in both hot-worked and annealed conditions. Due to significant heat generation during machining, the following are recommended:
Tooling:
High-speed steel tools
Cemented carbide tools
Cast non-ferrous cutting tools
Typical Turning Speeds:
High-speed / non-ferrous tools: 35–45 sfm (0.18–0.23 m/s)
Cemented carbide tools: 100–175 sfm (0.51–0.89 m/s)
These values are intended as initial setup guidelines only. Actual speeds and feeds may vary depending on part geometry and machining conditions.
A sulfur-based cutting oil is recommended for lubrication; however, it must be completely removed prior to welding or high-temperature exposure.
To achieve higher mechanical properties, Alloy 600 may be cold worked below 1200°F (649°C).
Cold working increases strength while maintaining good ductility and corrosion resistance.
Inconel 600 exhibits excellent weldability and can be joined using conventional methods, including:
Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW / TIG)
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW / MIG)
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
Brazing and soldering
Appropriate filler metals and welding procedures ensure strong, corrosion-resistant joints.
