Heat-Resistant Nickel Alloy

NASH38X (UNS N08120) ASTM Alloy 20is a high-nickel heat resistant alloy offering outstanding high-temperature strength anooxidation resistance. With coarse grain structure controlled by high temperature heat treatment and C, N, Nbcomponents, NASH38X offers particularly high creep strength. Womic Stainless Steel supplies NASH38X in plate, tubes and pipes form. Alloy 20 is an austenitic, nickel-iron-chromium-molybdenum alloy with the addition of copper. This combination makes it preferable in applications involving sulfuric, phosphoric, and nitric acids. The chromium and molybdenum content provide good pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. This grade exhibits exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) induced by chlorides. Alloy 20 can be utilized in a wide variety of chemical process environments and has good performance in most acids, alkalines, salts, and seawater.

Available Grade of Standard ASTM B407

ASTM B407 covers nickel alloy seamless pipes and tubes manufactured in cold-worked or hot-finished, annealed condition, including the following grades:

UNS N08120, UNS N08800, UNS N08801, UNS N08810, UNS N08811, UNS N08890, and UNS N06811.

Alloys UNS N08800 and UNS N06811 are typically used in service temperatures up to and including 1100°F (593°C), where good oxidation resistance and mechanical stability are required.

Alloys UNS N08120, UNS N08810, UNS N08811, and UNS N08890 are commonly applied in service temperatures above 1100°F (593°C), where superior creep resistance and rupture strength are essential. These alloys are supplied in the annealed condition with a controlled grain size to ensure optimum mechanical and high-temperature performance within this elevated temperature range.

Test Methods and Rounding of Values

Unless otherwise specified, observed or calculated values shall be rounded in accordance with the following rules:


Chemical Composition, Hardness, and Tolerances

When expressed in decimal form, values shall be rounded to the nearest unit in the last right-hand digit of the specified limit.


Tensile Strength and Yield Strength

Values shall be rounded to the nearest 1000 psi (6.9 MPa).


Elongation

Values shall be rounded to the nearest 1%.

Inspection of the material shall be performed as mutually agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser and shall be specified as part of the purchase contract or order.


Rejection and Rehearing

1. Material that does not conform to the requirements of this specification, or to any authorized modifications thereto, shall be subject to rejection.

2. Test samples representing rejected material shall be retained for a minimum of three (3) weeks from the date of the test report.

If dissatisfaction arises concerning the test results, the manufacturer may submit a request for rehearing within this retention period.


Certification

When specified in the purchase order or contract, the manufacturer shall provide a certification stating that the material has been manufactured, tested, and inspected in accordance with this specification and that test results for representative samples meet all specified requirements.

When required, a detailed test report shall also be furnished to the purchaser.


Product Marking

Each piece of material with an outside diameter of 3/4 in. (19.1 mm) or greater and a length of 3 ft (914 mm) or longer shall be legibly marked with the following information:

Trade name of the material or UNS designation

The letters ASTM

ASTM specification number

Heat number

Nominal size

Marking may be applied by any method that does not cause harmful contamination.


For material with an outside diameter less than 3/4 in. (19.1 mm) or length under 3 ft (914 mm), the required identification shall be stenciled or attached to a securely fixed tag on the bundle or shipping container.
